AŠHEN ATALJANC

Ašhen Ataljanc was born in 1971 in Belgrade and spent her childhood and youth in Pančevo, where she made her first ballet steps. She graduated from Lujo Davičo Ballet High School in Belgrade, and as a student at the age of 16, played on the stage of the National Theater in Belgrade.

Ašhen, at the age of 17, has already performed as a soloist for this national theater, and at the age of 21, she took the title of the prima ballerina. “The time passes unstoppably fast, as evidenced by the latest ballet premiere of “La Capinera ” at the Terazije Theater, which celebrated two decades of artistic work by our youngest prima ballerina Ašhen Ataljanc. Beloved by the Belgrade audience, our youngest White and Black Swan, the radiant Kitri, the romantic Giselle and Myrtle, the graceful Aurora, the poignant Marguerite Gautier, the passionate Carmen, the tragic Isadora Duncan, the mysterious Dalila… still very young she knew that her impeccable physical predispositions and intellectual sensibilities enriched her with insight. Although nurtured on classical traditions, Ašhen Ataljanc quickly adopted a contemporary dance sensibility as her artistic endeavor.

Following her work with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the State Opera in Berlin, she became a prominent member of the Italian Aterballeto, with which she has successfully performed on many world stages. And so, in front of our esteemed ballerina, the world of contemporary dance opened up, in which she, not forgetting the stringency of classical ballet, invested her worth, perseverance, and above all extraordinary endowment and personal artistic pleasure.

The past two decades have been a period of developing her extraordinary artistic character which today, at its performing maturity, shines in all its glory. She proved this by playing the leading role in the ballet “La Capinera” by Italian choreographer Michele Merola, specially created for her. Perfect body control, the beauty, and expressiveness of the dance moves that suppressed passion, frustration, love captured by fear and the desire to freely pursue the most subtle emotional desires – all this was given to the audience by Ašhen Ataljanc with a rich scale of expressive dance. In doing so, she once again proved her strong, dynamic, artistic individuality, which radiates a special prominence from the stage, ”Milica Zajčev wrote in the Today newspaper on the occasion of the premiere of the La Capinera ballet at the Terazije Theater that marked twenty years of Ašhen Ataljanc artistic work.

Critics around the world have portrayed the ballet art of Ašhen Ataljanc as a “miracle of neoclassical play, sensational, emotional, charismatic, convincing and technically flawless.” this multi-award-winning artist received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Association of Ballet Artists of Serbia in 2018.

Prima ballerina, a ballet master, and choreographer founded the Ašhen Ataljanc School of Dance in 2011, and her success as a teacher, has been proven w students’ awards.
