Georg Weifert

Georg Weifert was born in 1850 in Pančevo, in a wealthy family of industrialists. Father Ignjat had already bought a brewery in Pančevo, which was founded in 1722. It was the golden age of this brewery, the largest in the Balkans. People were coming in from Belgrade by boat for a cold pint of Weifert’s beer and salted pretzels which they enjoyed in the brewery’s garden.

The tradition of making good beer continued with Georg Weifert, who after completing elementary and high school in Pančevo and the Budapest Business School, graduated from the Great Brewing School in Bavaria, and at the age of 22 took over the management of a new brewery built by the Weifert family on Topčider.

Georg Weifert proved to be a very capable entrepreneur. He bought several mines in Serbia and quickly became one of the most respected and wealthy industrialists as a pioneer of modern mining. He was among the founders of the National Bank of Serbia and for a total of 26 years, its governor.

He was a great benefactor and donor, modernizer, visionary, generous patron of cultural and humanitarian institutions, a friend of scientists and artists. He is known to have been a great numismatist who donated his rich collection of coins to Belgrade University. He was a volunteer in the Serbian army during the war with the Turks in 1876-1878. He was awarded the Order of Courage for his heroism, which, out of all the medals and accolades he received, was his only choice to be buried with. George Weifert had a prominent role in Serbian and Yugoslav Freemasonry and was the permanent head of the Belgrade Lodge “Pobratim” and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge “Yugoslavia.”

In 1923, in honor of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of his marriage to Marie Gassner, George Weifert erected St. Anna’s Church in his native Pančevo, and the same year, he was named an honorary citizen.

George Weifert died in Belgrade in 1937 and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Pančevo, to the left of the portal previously erected at his expense.  George Weifert is on a 1000 Serbian dinar bill. The value of the Weifert family’s property that was seized by the state after World War II is estimated at $ 12 billion. The state-owned beer factory in Pančevo was privatized in the early 21st century but has not been operational since 2008.
