UROŠ PREDIĆ
Uroš Predić was born in 1857 in the village of Orlovat near Zrenjanin and is one of the most prominent Serbian painters of Realism. At the age of five, he started school because he already learned how to read and write, which was a rarity at the time.
His painting talent was noticed very early, and as an eight-year-old, he painted his first significant work – St. Nicholas, the patron saint celebrated in his house. He attended a seven-year high school in Pančevo, and it is noted that he knew more about painting than his professor, so he was often a lecturer in classes. The talented student received a scholarship from Matica Srpska and went to study at the Art Academy in Vienna.
In 1885, Uroš Predić returned to his homeland and began to make custom portraits in Pančevo, and because of the striking resemblance to the figures of commissioners, he is somewhat seen as a chronicler of the civil society of his time. He painted portraits of many prominent Pančevo citizens, including Vaso Živković, Mihajlo Pupin and his professor from the Pančevo High School.
He has portrayed many renowned figures, King Peter, Queen Natalia, Jovan Cvijić, Stojan Novaković, Mihail Petrović, Djordje Vajfert … In the period from 1906 to 1911 Uroš Predić painted an iconostasis in the Church of the Transfiguration in Pančevo and thus completed his ecclesiastical opus. He painted the beautiful iconostasis in the Bečej Orthodox Church, as well as in his native Orlovat. Uroš Predić has also worked on genre and historical compositions, the most famous of which are “Merry Brothers,” “The Kosovo Maiden,” ” The Girl at the Well, ” as well as the works “Refugees of Herzegovina” and “Orphan on Her Mother’s Grave,” bought by Mihajlo Pupin at an exhibition in Paris in 1889 and donated to the National Museum in Belgrade.
In his 96th year, still with creative energy, Uroš Predić fell out of his chair while adding finishing touches to his paintings in his studio. He died a few months later, in 1953 in Belgrade. He was buried at his request in his native Orlovat. The high school in Pančevo bears his name.
